This site is located in northern Israel, on the southern end of the Jordan River, just east of Nazareth.
What is the significance of the the Jordan River, or Yardenit?
A spiritual highlight for many of our pilgrims occurs at the Yardenit Baptismal site. It holds a special place in the hearts of believers because it was here where John the Baptist first baptized Jesus. Following this baptism, Jesus began performing miracles and preaching in the Galilee region and throughout the Land of Israel.
The Yardenit in the Scripture:
To quote Matthew 3:13-17:
Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to be baptized by John. But John tried to deter him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?” Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.” Then John consented.As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”
Though the Yardenit Baptism site is a small place, it is overflowing with meaning to those who visit. Another significant place where this Baptism Site was mentioned is Mark 1:9-11. Indeed, in all four gospel accounts of Baptism (Matthew 3:13-17; Mark 1:9-11; Luke 3:21-22; John 1:29-34), the Trinity is present.
For this reason, it is an experience like no other for visiting Pilgrims.
Can I get Baptised in the Jordan River?
Yes. The Jordan River is a recognized religious site in Israel and is a popular place of Pilgrimage for Believers. Some may experience their first Baptism in the Yardenit, others choose to renew their Baptism.
